Studies in Recreation, Sports and Fitness
SPR has conducted a number of studies dealing with sports, recreation and fitness, such as:
- Evaluation of Injuries in Amateur Hockey. This study involved a survey of 1,000 hockey teams,
and the development of a methodology
for monitoring incidence, severity, and causes of sports injuries (for the Hockey
Development Centre Ontario and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation, 1987-88).
- Survey of Ontario Cottagers on Lake-Oriented Recreational Behaviour and the Presence
of Algae.
This study of 5,000 cottagers on 214 Ontario lakes examined the incidence of algae and
effects on swimming, boating and other water use (for the Ontario Ministry of Environment,
1986).
- Evaluation of Injuries in Amateur Gymnastics.
This study was focused on a year-long panel survey of injuries and medical conditions
among 1,400 Ontario amateur gymnasts (for the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation
and The Ontario Gymnastic Federation, 1988-90).
- Study of Recreational Preferences and Activities of Residents of the City of
Mississauga.
This study involved a survey of over 3,000 households on recreational activities and needs
of their neighbourhoods for parks, facilities, services, theatres, museums, etc. (for the
City of Mississauga, 1984).
- Study of Recreation Needs and Services in Peel Region.
This study examined the use of recreational services at the Peel Region YMCA-YWCA, through
a survey of 500 residents of Brampton (for Peel Region
YMCA-YWCA, 1982).
- Study of Recreation Needs of the Elderly in Ajax and Pickering.
This study surveyed 600 elderly households regarding their recreation needs and
preferences (for the Social Planning Council of Ajax and Pickering, 1978).
